What Makes an Investment Grade™ Franchise Is What Makes Any Business an Asset
Imagine someone across the table offering to buy what you built, at a premium. They’re not buying your hours or your effort. They’re buying the business itself, because you built it right.
You aren’t stuck in the middle of it, running everything. You can say yes or no from a place of choice. And what you built keeps its value, perhaps more so, without you in it.
That is an asset. Most founders are building something else and do not know it yet.
By Dr. Robert A. Needham's count (author of Investment Grade Franching,) less than 10% of franchise systems meet the standard of a true Investment Grade™ Franchise. He has spent 35 years saying this out loud, even to rooms full of people who did not want to hear it. He calls the other 90% the extraction model. Royalties come before profit. Compliance comes before competence. Control comes before collaboration. These systems make money for the franchisor and a hard job for the franchisee.
This matters even if you never franchise. Every entrepreneur is building one of two things. Either an asset, or a job that pays in bits and pieces. That is true whether you have heard the term Investment Grade™ or not.

The Standard Has Numbers
Investment Grade™ is a specific standard.
A gross margin near 80%. EBITDA of 40% or more. A total cost to open below $150,000. It runs on service. It runs light on assets. Technology helps it run. It is easy to write down and easy to hand off. It grows without owning real estate or carrying heavy debt. It also runs without the owner in every step.
Put simply, it is a business built to create wealth, not just income. These numbers matter. They help a business survive a bad quarter, a manager who quits, or a shift in the market. They are also what a buyer or investor checks when they look past your story and into your spreadsheet.
Selling Units Is Not the Same as Building Value
A franchise system can sell units for years and still be worth nothing. The same goes for any business that sells products or hours. Selling and building value are different. Many founders learn this at the worst moment, when someone finally tries to buy what they built.
Three things get checked every time. First, unit economics that hold up under real review, not just your own hopes. Second, royalty velocity. That means how fast the system collects what it is owed, not what the forecast said. Third, durability. Any serious buyer asks these three questions about any business, franchised or not. Franchising just forces you to write the answers down and defend them.

The Standard Has a Soul
Here is the other half of those numbers.
The point of an Investment Grade™ system was never the spreadsheet. The spreadsheet makes something else possible. A system built on extraction treats franchisees like sources of revenue. A system built to the Investment Grade™ standard shares success. Everyone inside it grows. The franchisor builds wealth. The franchisee builds wealth. The brand gets stronger because no one inside it is being drained.
That is the test for any franchise system or any one-person business. Does what you build create wealth for everyone in it? Or does it trap the people in it?
Growth built on certainty lasts. Growth built on fear only survives. A business built as an asset gets easier to run, easier to grow, and easier to sell one day. A business built to extract gets harder on all three, every year.
I am a Certified Investment Grade Architect, trained directly by Dr. Needham. I will say this once. The credential matters less than the standard behind it. The standard is what you build toward, no matter who certifies you.

Franchisors hand their owners a playbook and a territory. What no manual transfers is the identity shift from operator to owner, and closing that gap is the work her Strategy. Structure. Soul. framework does.
She knows that gap personally. After decades in survival mode behind a superwoman facade, everything imploded in her early 50s. That implosion became the greatest gift she ever received, freeing her to build differently. She now proves you don't have to choose between freedom and wealth, ease and success, or joy and ambition.
